So, when should you take maternity photos?
The short answer: somewhere around 28–36 weeks.
The slightly more complicated answer: whenever you still feel reasonably comfortable being a human being.
For some people, 28–30 weeks is the sweet spot. Your belly is beautifully round, you still have some energy, and putting on shoes hasn't yet become a full-contact sport.
For others, waiting until 34–36 weeks feels right. The bump is bigger, the finish line is getting closer, and you're really starting to feel like oh wow, there is actually a baby coming.
There isn't a magic week where your belly suddenly becomes “maternity-photo ready.” Your body is doing its thing, and every pregnancy is different.
I usually recommend choosing a date based on how you're feeling, not just what the calendar says. If you're uncomfortable early on, expecting multiples, or your pregnancy has given you a few extra reasons to take it easy, we can absolutely plan your session earlier.
And here's the other thing: you don't need to feel amazing every second of pregnancy to deserve beautiful photos of it.
Maybe you're glowing. Maybe you're swollen. Maybe you're exhausted and haven't seen your toes in three months. Maybe you're completely in love with being pregnant. Maybe you're counting down the days.
Probably a little bit of all of the above.
That's what I want to photograph.
My Columbus maternity sessions are relaxed and focused on documenting this particular season of your life—not just your belly. We'll photograph you with your partner, your kids, your home, the nursery, or wherever you feel most like yourself. We can stay home, head outside, or do a little of both.
So if you're somewhere between “I love being pregnant!” and “okay, but seriously, when is this baby coming?” you're probably right on schedule.
